Will Auto Insurance Pay for Damage from Driving Through Water?

Driving through water is dangerous both for the driver and the vehicle. Damage to the undercarriage of the vehicle as well as the motor, tires, and body, can be significant. Damages can occur even after short periods of exposure.

It is not uncommon for the headlights, or even the interior of a vehicle to suffer damage in these instances. What should you do if you have this type of damage? Your auto insurance may help.

Comprehensive Auto Insurance Coverage and Flood Waters

In some situations, driving through flooded areas is unavoidable. When this occurs, car insurance may cover some or all of the damage to the vehicle. However, there are limits.

First, you will need to have the right type of coverage. Comprehensive auto insurance is the most likely to provide this type of protection. Other forms of car insurance, such as liability and collision, do not apply in this situation.

The Conditions Matter

Auto insurance provides financial protection to you from damage considered unavoidable and accidental. If you drive through water without taking proper care, such actions are often negligent. Coverage may not apply.

If on the other hand, you get caught in a downpour that leaves your vehicle exposed, it may provide coverage to you.

It is also important to consider what damage occurred. The policy often does not compensate claims related to normal wear and tear. For example, most floodwater is not going to cause exterior body damage. Was the water high enough to enter the vehicle or the engine to cause damage?

Ultimately, the auto insurance provider will have a thorough inspection done to determine if the damage was completely related to the floodwaters or if it was due to another concern.

What Should You Do If You Have Damage from Driving Through a Flood?

The first step is to make sure you are safe. Then, contact your auto insurance provider to inquire about your policy and coverage. After explaining what occurred, your car insurance provider can answer questions about the coverage you have. Take the time to act quickly so as not to damage the vehicle further from the current event’s level of damage.
